Chris worked hard not to let his thoughts play out on his face even as anger bubbled up in him. He didn't know anything about Annie’s past relationships, but it wasn’t a far mental jump to guess that she did more of the caring—nurturing and otherwise. She walked around with other people’s schedules, calendars, and to-do lists labeled and catalogued in her head. She made other people’s plans happen, keeping on top of everything. She was firm with vendors and understanding with freaking out brides and grooms. A force to be reckoned with, she moved through the world with total reassurance. That was why the moment that he saw that flash of vulnerability in her eyes, it was like someone kicked him in the gut. She was paid to take care of other people, but who was doing the same for her?

It scared the fuck out of him that he wanted to be that man. But nothing worth going after wasn’t frightening at some point.

He was jumping way too far ahead. Sure, he wanted to move to Hawaii, but that wasn’t a guarantee that whatever this relationship was would go anywhere. His dating history was littered with short flings that burned hot and fast, falling apart as soon as they got more complicated than “Whose place are we going to tonight?” But then, none of those other women was Annie—whip smart, sexy, and unashamedly determined.

He strode into the kitchen, determined to tamp down all of the worry and confusion. This was supposed to be fun, not a therapy session handling his totally meaningless relationship history.

“You’re really cooking?” she called out as she padded out from the bedroom.

“Get used to it.”

“Pots and pans are to the left of the sink. Pantry's that tall cabinet next to the fridge.”

Over his shoulder, he watched her pull a stool up to the island. She'd wrapped herself in a thin white robe but taken that long, gorgeous hair of hers down. It was a partial win.

He pulled the pantry door open. “Let's see what you've got in here.”

A respectable stash of staples lined the shelves. It didn't surprise him at all that hyper-organized Annie ran her kitchen just like she did the rest of her life. Preparation was the name of the game.

He grabbed a couple of boxes of stock and a tin of San Marzano tomatoes. “You've got good ingredients.”

“I'm glad you think so. So what are you making?”

He put the cans down and moved to the fridge. “You're just going to have to find out, aren't you?”

Inside of a drawer he found a block of cheddar cheese. In the freezer was a loaf of sliced French bread. Perfect.

Chris lined up his ingredients on the island and set about opening the tomatoes. “Tell me something about you that no one else knows.”

Annie pulled a face. “Is this like a sneaky version of Never Have I Ever?”

“If you want it to be.”

“I'm flashing back to college.”

He laughed. “I'll take your word for it. I did two semesters at UCLA and quit to go to culinary school.
